Natural Hair Care – The Dos and Don'ts

Do you really know what’s in your hair care? And, is it doing the most for your locks? Time to take the complication out of the science and get inspired by nature again.

Let Mother Nature be your haircare!

Taking care of our different hair textures and hair needs can be like solving a mystery. What’s liquid gold to some people turns others' hair into a crispy nightmare. We’re going back to school... hair school to learn what chemical caress and what chemicals crush your hair health.

Hair Ingredient Don'ts

Parabens

Pesky parabens are a well-known anti-care ingredient. They were first added to the products to extend the shelf life of the products and to prevent mould growth within the product. Sadly, despite extending the shelf life they draw moisture out of the hair and scalp, but they can also cause irritation and skin flaking. Not to mention, exacerbating any existing skin conditions or allergic reactions.

Sulphates

The role of sulphates is to strip dirt and oil from the hair. In hair that has excess oils or is very dirty, this can be an astringent way of cleaning the hair. However, it's healthy for hair to have some moisture and oils. Using sulphates regularly can lead to dry and brittle hair that’s prone to breakage. This drying effect extends to the scalp which can lead to irritation and flaking.

Phthalates

The role of phthalates in hair care products is to prolong the active smell of the product in addition to improving the texture of the product. However, in recent studies, phthalates have been related to hormonal dysregulation related to reproductive health and hair loss.

Hair Ingredient Dos

Coconut Oil

Cooking ingredient, Skincare Wizz and now hair perfector. Coconut Oil has been shown not only to improve the texture and appearance but overall health too. Studies demonstrate that coconut oil can prevent protein loss in your hair strands, thus improving the overall stability of the hair shaft. The structure, of coconut oil, makes it easy to absorb and takes effect on the hair in one wash. Not to mention the naturally tropical scent it imparts.

Avocado Oil

Avocado oil is a universal carrier for other oils, essential oils, vitamins and minerals. It’s naturally rich in B and E vitamins which enriches the hair shaft leaving strong and glossy locks. Moreover, it has been known to be rich in antioxidants that help protect the hair shaft from UV and environmental damage. Avocado Oil is a popular and profoundly effective oil for damaged hair from styling, colouring, UV and pollutants.

White Kaolin Clay

Kaolin does exactly what it does in skin care, it cleanses and purifies. Our hair acts as an outer layer of protection against the elements, thus collecting all the dust, dirt and grime we encounter. Aside from our skin and clothes, our hair and scalp are the biggest accumulators of dirt and are most in need of a good clean. Aside from removing build-up, White Kaolin clay restores the hair’s PH balance and absorbs excess oils.

Rosemary

The viral sensation is rosemary oil. Known and infamous for its almost magical ability to stimulate hair regrowth. Its mechanism of action is to act as a testosterone blocker. In turn, this increases follicle stimulation and hair growth. Other studies demonstrate that rosemary oil also acts as a vasodilator increasing oxygen carriage to the scalp and promoting growth.
